Maroon Harpoon Competes in 2007 International Human Powered Submarine Races

Congratulations to our own Ocean Engineering undergraduate students on a great performance at the 9th International Submarine Races held June 25-29, 2007 at the David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, MD.

The competition consisted of 22 human powered submarine teams that included 26 submarines from the US, Canada, Mexico, and United Kingdom. Maroon Harpoon posted the 3rd best absolute speed of 5.022 knots which included a $250 cash award, and was second in the “Fastest Speed, One Person, Academic” category. Maroon Harpoon also received honorable mention for the Best Overall Performance.

The Texas A&M human powered submarine, Maroon Harpoon, performed very reliably at the 9th International Submarine Races. The co-team leaders were Bryce Read and Luke Savoie. The pilots, Luke Savoie and Robert Sanchez, trained in the Texas A&M OTRC Wave Basin in May and trained on their own before the races. Luke Savoie was the pilot for last year’s race in California so his experience was very valuable. This year was Robert Sanchez’s first racing experience. Fourteen Ocean Engineering students, Michael Blaylock, Sean Dyer, Scott Freeman, Casey Hodges, Vanna Keller, Autumn Kidwell, Eric Lieb, Robert Pelley, David Piazza, Bryce Read, Robert Sanchez, Luke Savoie, and AJ Schulle attended the races. The team performed very well this year and their efforts were recognized by the honorable mention for overall performance award which included $250 award. Luke Savoie piloted the submarine for the fastest speed of 5.022 knots, which was the fastest American submarine and the third fastest in the 26 submarine field. Robert Sanchez also piloted the Maroon Harpoon at the races and his top speed was 4.875 knots. Completing 19 out of the 21 races attempted is outstanding and is attributed to the excellent design and workmanship of the new submarine hull, previously used propulsion and control systems, and a mix of experienced and new team members.
