The ocean engineering curriculum includes courses in written communication skills, humanities, social sciences, and American heritage to ensure a well-rounded education. Courses that directly apply to ocean engineering include: coastal engineering, dynamics of ocean systems, engineering design of offshore and coastal systems, fluid mechanics, marine hydrodynamics, naval architecture, numerical methods, ocean engineering laboratory, ocean wave mechanics, oceanography, offshore and coastal structures, underwater acoustics, and underwater and moored system design. A number of approved technical elective courses are also required.
The requirements to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering are determined by the year of your enrollment at Texas A&M University. Each year is governed by a new Catalog; the 2009-10 catalog is Catalog 132. A database of Texas A&M University catalogs is available at the Office of Admissions web site. The following PDF files provide the required courses and a course flow chart detailing pre- and corequisites and timing for courses offered once-per-year for several recent catalogs:
The Ocean Engineering Program offers a large number of undergraduate courses for students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering. These courses are described in the Courses page of this web site.
Several of the core requirements courses (e.g. ENGR 111 or CVEN 305) are also taught from within the Look College of Engineering or the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering. Descriptions of all courses offered at the University can be obtained in the University Course Catalog.
Breadth courses are to be selected from the University Core Curriculum. Of the 18 hours required as University Core Curriculum electives, 3 must be from visual and performing arts, 3 from social and behavioral science, 6 from U.S. history, 6 from POLS 206 and 207, and 6 from international and cultural diversity. The international and cultural diversity requirement may be met by courses satisfying the visual and performing arts, social and behavioral sciences, and the political science and history requirements if they are also on the approved list of international and cultural diversity courses.
Writing Skills Elective
The technical writing elective must be selected from ENGL 210 or 301. In addition, students are required to take writing intensive courses (W-Courses) in their major discipline. The current W-Courses in the Ocean Engineering curriculum are OCEN 410 Ocean Engineering Laboratory and ENGR 482 Engineering Ethics.
Technical Electives
Several technical electives must be selected from the approved Technical Elective List, and at least 3 credit hours must be engineering design. Students who wish to take technical courses not on the list may do so with approval by the Ocean Engineering Program Head or the Undergraduate Advisor.
